Windows Vista System lockup Problem

by nosey1968 / July 22, 2009 9:46 AM PDT

I have a HP Pavilion PC running windows vista home professional edition (64 bit).
Never had a problem in 4 months sinvce new until today. I was running a video editing programme when the system locked. All attempts since to enter the system have failed.

I re-boot, and for 5 seconds I have access to the computer (while start-up process is completing), as soon as start-up is done the computer locks and I can no nothing but re-boot again.

I have run system self tests om start-up and have no errors.
I CANNOT get access to system restore etc as comupter locks after 5 seconds.

I have tried re-entering the system disk, but never enough time to execute it.

Any suggestions would be very much appreciated.

5 seconds from what point?

For instance, can you access the system BIOS? If it locks up within 5 seconds of turning on, even when booting from disc, it is likely a hardware issue. However, if it locks up 5 seconds into Windows, it is a software issue, likely with a startup application that can be disabled using MSConfig (press Windows + R and enter msconfig into the Run box) in Safe Mode (press F8 during boot).

problem somewhat solved.

I tried many things and eventually bought software from spotmau(powersuite 2009) that recovers my system and protects from similar problems in the future.

The problem was interesting as I could not access the start menu, yet excel would work etc if I opened it within the 5 second lock-down time.

I appreciate the replies and help.
