windows vista missing files, documents and pics

Just as my subject suggests, I notices picture files are empty, I dont see word files and I wouldnt mind getting my income tax files back ...
I havent backed up yet ... any help

Missing files - suggestions.

...How are you noticing that files are missing ? How many user accounts are there - general users - users with Administrator's privileges ? Are you using the appropriate user account to view the files ? Have you tried the search function to look for them ?

We where trying to back up pics and these where gone then started looking at documents and these where missing a lot of documents went to tax file ... gone ... this hp is set up as general users but just My wife and I are on it ... tried the search and just comes up empty file ...

...they cannot just disappear. Look in to the Recycle Bin -if found, restore them to their original locations. How many accounts are you using ? Each account has its own "Document" folder. If your wife and you each have your own user account, look into the "Document" folder of the account used to save the files by using that account to boot up the computer.

just one account ... I believe you that they cant just disappear ... Im sure my hardrive space is still the same but none the less I cant see my pictures and documents in files ... Ive searched file names and reviewed recycle bin ... nothing ...
