Windows Explorer shuts down when "Videos" folder is opened

by kbithecrowing / August 11, 2009 12:04 PM PDT

Lately whenever I try to open my videos folder Windows Explorer has an error and restarts itself. I only have about 9 video files in the folder, half are movies and half are videos I took at concerts. I can't access the files before Windows restarts Explorer so basically right now the files are lost to me. Is there any way I can move the files in another way or fix this problem entirely?

This is a well known issue.

Explorer tries to decode the files and fails. Gyula's Navigator and maybe VLC Player can move or play such things until you figure out what CODEC is required.

Just a link to a codec inspector.

my problem happens even before I try to open a file though, would this still help?

In reply to: hmm

But it appears you didn't try the tool. My prediction could be wrong if it will help you identify the missing codec or not but it is the tool I use to find out which codec I need. Sorry again, I can tell you that it will fix your machine.
