Question

Why can I only get Netflix anime in Japanese?

by jdrose62 / August 10, 2013 1:13 AM PDT

Why can I only get Netflix anime in Japanese on my BD-D6500 Samsung 3D Blu-ray Disc Player. All my other devices get the same anime programs in English. Netflix says it is a Samsung issue and Samsung says it is a Netflix issue. Suggestions anyone?

Where did you buy the player? What version of the Netflix app? And - most important - from what country are you looking?

I got the player on Amazon about a year and a half ago. I was getting English on the Netflix anime programs until about 4 weeks ago, but now Japanese! My smart phone, laptop, and Visio Blu-ray player all play the exact same videos in English! The Samsung Blu-ray has the latest firmware. I'm in the USA.

There is no Audio and Subtitles sub-menu on my BD-D6500. I least, I can't find it listed where your link said. If you could help me find it that would be great!

Hi jdrose62,

OK, what are the titles that are acting like this? I'll see if I can replicate the behavior,

If both companies bail on you, then you return the product for one that works.

I take it you tried the Service Issues in this forum?

This is worth a little explaining.

Samsung has a platform and Netflix writes the app. Netflix supplies the content so my view is that Netflix is the one that needs to fix this. I can't by any stretch write it's a Samsung issue here as Samsung didn't write the app or supply content. But if neither company will fix it, then as a consumer you know what to do next.

I believe something has changed w/ netflix default stream.
by discday / October 2, 2013 1:07 AM PDT

Netflix has a list of Samsung devices that support Subtitles, Alternate Audio, 5.1 Surround Sound. The older Samsung TV's don't so you can't go into the Netflix app and enable this. One suggested solution, from Netflix support, is to go to another device, log into your account, and play 4 or 5 dubbed movies for at least 5 minutes with the dubbing turned on. This sets your "library" to default to these settings, supposedly. This worked for subtitles on a Chinese show for me "Detective Dee" It wasn't playing w/ subtitles on the TV now it does after watching it on a computer w/ subtitles enabled. It hasn't worked for dubbing.

It seems to be something that's changed in the last couple of months. Shows I had previously watched that were dubbed by default, now only play in Japanese; Black Butler for one.
