Wavy lines on monitor

by Testy / August 18, 2009 7:22 AM PDT

After my computer has been on for about 1 hour it starts getting shimmery wavy horizontal lines on the monitor. I thought maybe it was getting to warm for some reason and took off cover to allow more air but it didn't help. I also blew all the dust out. The video card is less than a year old. Any ideas?

The first thing to determine: is it the monitor or the video card. Swap the monitor with that from another PC and you'll know in an hour or so.

I finally had time to lug my heavy 19 in CRT monitor up out of the basement. Hooked it up and no wavy lines. I don't get it, if it is the monitor, what difference does it make if the computer is just rebooted???? It should be doing it no matter how long the computer has been on. I don't get it.

Use a different PC or Video Card

Can you connect your regular monitor to another PC for an hour or so to see if it gets the lines? I assume the CRT is a spare monitor.
