Vizio 5.1 SOUNDBAR HELP!!!

by rynknt / July 23, 2011 11:57 AM PDT

<span id="INSERTION_MARKER"> I had purchased the Vizio 5.1 Surround Sound Home Theater with Wireless Subwoofer (VHT510). Here is my Dilemma: I want the 5.1 Surround Sound.
<span id="INSERTION_MARKER">

<span id="INSERTION_MARKER">Vizio's Sound System only takes ONE input: OPTICAL (an optical wire is supposed to be plugged into the TV's Optical out and the TV is supposed to act as the mixer in this way).
<span id="INSERTION_MARKER">

<span id="INSERTION_MARKER">My TV has an optical Output; BUT, it only outputs in Stereo Sound (as with most TVs).
<span id="INSERTION_MARKER">

<span id="INSERTION_MARKER">I tried looking into audio receivers but NONE of them OUTPUT in 5.1 optical
<span id="INSERTION_MARKER">

<span id="INSERTION_MARKER">The speakers only cost $280. Is there any way to get 5.1 surround sound? I currently only need it for my Blu-Ray Player (PS3); BUT when I plug the optical directly from the PS3 into the sound system, the sound is a little faster than the picture on the TV (a Sharp Quattron). Also every time I would skip a chapter or input another menu option on my PS3, I would have to reselect the optical input on my Vizio sound remote for the sound system--it keeps dropping the optical signal input when plugged into the PS3. But I do get 5.1 surround sound this way....
<span id="INSERTION_MARKER">

<span id="INSERTION_MARKER">PLEASE HELP! I checked all of the other forums; but people are not very smart with this product. They think they're getting 5.1 surround sound with plugging the optical from their TV (but what they don't realize is that their satellite speakers are playing the same audio as the right and left channels: i.e. it's only outputting in STEREO and not in 5.1 surround).

Very hard to read.

The short answer is that for ALL optical audio it will be stereo with ONE and only ONE EXCEPTION.

OTA (over the air) HiDef can be better than stereo.

This is NO technical limitation here. And there is nothing broken. This was agreed upon by all the HDTV and equipment makers to block/thwart/impede leaking of HD AUDIO.

Sorry that so few want to spell it out but too often folk get upset when this is revealed.

I'm not familiar with the PS3 nor soundbars.
Receivers will send 5.1 surround through the optical connections but only DTS and Dolby Digital found on standard DVD's. Optical will not transmit DTS Master Audio and Dolby True HD soundtracks on blu ray discs. The PS3 setup may allow you to downconvert the HD soundtracks to LCPM.
