UN46C6800 VS UN46C6900

by ORTHOTIC / June 13, 2010 6:56 AM PDT

I have been interested in purchasing the UN46C6800 for quite some time now and then today noticed there is a UN46C6900. What is the difference? This TV will be used in a room that could be quite bright during the day (several windows) but most of the viewing will be during the evening. Is this a good choice? Does Samsung have anything comparable to the 2009 UN46B8500 for 2010? I appreciate your time and help!

ORTHOTIC,

The UN46C6900 is a Best Buy exclusive, and doesn't have the SamsungApps, but does have HotApps, which is a partnership with Best Buy for many of their widgets. You'll still be able to get Netflix, Pandora and many of the other services, but they won't be under the SamsungApps, but the HotApps offering by Best Buy.

Currently, there are no plans to release a B8500-like LED for 2010 that I'm aware of. Things can change, of course, but at this point, I'm not aware of any plans.

Does that help?

BACK-LIT VS EDGE-LIT

So I guess my next question is what are the pros and cons of Back Lit (UN46B8500) vs Edge Lit (UN46C6800) HDTVs? Is the 2009 UN46B8500 still being manufactured by Samsung? If someone were to give you one of these TVs for free which way would you go? Please advise. Thanks!

ORTHOTIC,

The B8500 backlit allows you to have region (or local) dimming; where the light source behind the panel actually dims or turns off depending on the picture.

The C6800 doesn't have that, but does consume less power than the B8500, and provides a great picture as well.

I wouldn't have a preference either way - both are great sets, but back-light systems are typically more expensive, and desired by the true videophiles. The models this year focus on a great picture and eco-friendliness, as well as incorporating the Samsung Apps in several of the higher models, including the C6800.

So either one is a winner, depending on what best suits your needs.

Does that help?

Is subject set still being manufactured and supported by Samsung? Why are there not any 2010 back-lit models, giving customers this additional option?

ORTHOTIC,

The B8500 is not being manufactured at this time, to the best of my knowledge. I can't speak to what prompts change, additions or subtractions to features or technologies - I'm not part of those discussions. I'm sorry for not being able to answer that more directly.

TO HD NET

While Researching I noticed that the C6900(Best Buy Exclusive) has a different colored Bezel than the C6800 that is being soled on Websites such as Amazon...

Can you tell us what is the color difference

saumnike,

The 6800 offers the Touch of Color in the wood grain finish.

Based on what I have for the 6900 model, it would be a granite/black finish.

difference between C6800 and C6900
by ljubimov / September 28, 2010 1:56 AM PDT

From this thread I did not get what is the real difference between these two series and the reason behind the production of two (almost) identical sets. Is it only about the touch of color hue? Or is there something more of a substance? Which one to buy? List price is the same but street price is higher on 6900. Because of a newer release?
