Question

Target Display mode - mini DisplayPort to mini-DVI?

by kl4tna / November 12, 2012 11:40 PM PST

Can I connect iMac (24"Early09) miniDisplayPort "Primary Computer" to iMac (24"Mid07) miniDVI "ExtMonitor" using TargetDisplayMode. (Found a mini-DVI to mini DisplayPort connecter with USB power and audio passthrough online.) Possible?

Going with No, if I understand the question correctly.

If you are trying to connect iMac A to iMac B through their video out ports, then this is not going to work.

Target mode calls for A and B to be connected via a Firewire cable; 800, 400 or 800/400.

The MiniDisplay port and the mini-DVD ports are both outbound ports and will not receive a signal.

I am trying to connect my iMac (24"Mid07) miniDVI "ExtMonitor" to my iMac (24"Early09) miniDisplayPort "Primary Computer" using TargetDisplayMode. I want my iMac (24"Mid07) miniDVI to act as an additional display monitor for my iMac (24"Early09) miniDisplayPort "Primary Computer". I believe you are referring to Target DISK Mode, which utilizes a connected computer to a primary computer as an external hard drive that mounts on the primary computer's desktop.

Sorry, yes I was confusing the two.

However, while checking out the correct thing I note that everyone talks about doing this with a Thunderbolt cable, something your machines cannot use.

However, I did come across this article on the Apple site: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3924

Seems to include at least one of your machines.

Sorry about the earlier mixup
