Sony HRD-CX430v Camcorder

by calvinc6 / April 22, 2013 6:12 AM PDT

The mounting points for attaching a tripod or grip on the Sony HRD-CX430v are backward. The hole to screw in the bolt is in front of the hole for the alignment pin.

This means no tripods or camera grips will fit the camcorder except those marketed by Sony. Even their GP-ATV1 grip will not fit their own product.

I talked to Sony tech support and they told me to buy a Sony tripod. What a rip off of the public.

With all the tripods I have had, the pin has either been spring loaded or removable, there is no problem mounting Sony cameras on third party tripods. Often the mounting heads can be installed in the clamp in either direction. It is a matter of researching the right tripod for the job.
My Sony Hi-8 camera "lived" on top of a Velbon tripod most of the time.

The only unfortunate thing about modern camcorders is that they are so small, especially compared to the "beasts" of yesteryear! The result is that they just look so silly mounted on a decent fluid head video tripod. All the cred has disappeared.
