Ram spaced needed need Help

I have 1 GB of memory sticks and was told I could add 4GB.Now I am confused. Do I replace my two memory sticks with two that add up to 4GB or two with 4GB that equal total of 8GB???? I have Gateway MT3707 laptop running vista

Your machine has two 2 slots.
Each slot can handle a maximum stick size of 1GB.

So.....2 sticks at 1GB each equals 2GB.

I asked the tech for Lexmark and he did say 2 GB max. like you said
