Puzzled!? 'Safari 4 Windows' update is lower 5.1.7

by edgbaston / May 12, 2012 11:21 PM PDT

Is something amiss here?

Have gotten use to updated software having a higher number than previous versions. This latest Apple update as advised on CNET Techtracker and Apple Software Update is for a lower number.

i have been using version since advised to update on 12th March 2012 by either Apple Software Update or CNET Techtracker. Now i am being told the new update is version, 5.1.7.

Please advise?

that you re-post this in CNET TechTracker's dedicated forum here?

In the meantime I wouldn't try and 'update' your Safari as I agree, it sounds very strange.

Has there been any changes on your system recently, a new computer, or a reinstall of the operating system? If so it may mean that TechTracker's details of your system is out of date and you need to let it re-scan your system, but don't follow my advice as I don't know much about TechTracker and I might be telling you wrong.

Instead, give as much information as you can in your new post.

Good luck.

Seems legitimate

Hi edgbaston,

I apologize for any confusion here, and the delay in response. Since Apple Software Update also shows the most current version of Safari for Windows as 5.1.7, it seems perfectly legitimate to me. I can't speak to the logic behind Apple's version numbering, but I did see the same information on my own CNET TechTracker page, so went ahead and clicked "Standard Install" to update Safari, which now shows as current at 5.1.7.

i now know the answer to my own problem and am sorry for wasting everyone's time.

You will note that i emphasised that my Windows, 'Programs and Features' and 'Revo Uninstaller' give my current Safari (for Windows) version as, ''. What this bear of very little brain had failed to check was the browser's very own, 'About Safari'. This i did last night after accidentally opening the browser, though what prompted me to do so when i had intended to just , 'File, Exit', i now do not remember. There was the answer to my update conundrum: 'Safari 5.1.5 (7534.55.3). How Windows, 'Programs and Features' and 'Revo Uninstaller' interpret that to 'Safari' is a whole other can of worms that is best left to my friend 'Owl'.

Thank you for your reply and time.

You may now mark the issue as closed.

Cheers, ben
