If you want to store a lot of data, you might still need a HDD. Currently SSD's go up to about 500GB. But they are expensive compared to a HDD of the same size.
If your laptop can take 2 HDDs or an SSD and a HDD then you'll be OK. You just need to put your operating system onto the SSD.
If you only have space for 1 SSD or HDD then you'll need to spend big on a big SSD or maybe try a SSHD - combined SSD and HDD (eg Seagate 500GB or 1 TB).
If you got a Windows disk with the laptop, you should be able to remove the old HDD, put in the SSD (or SSHD) in it's place and then use the OS disk to put the OS onto the SSD. Then you'll need to move your data from the old HDD to the new SSD plus reinstall your programs again.
