Programs won't run

by sonicmolasses / May 18, 2008 4:19 AM PDT

I have done nothing new to my computer, but I am unable to run any programs except Microsoft Office and Explorer. When I try to open anything else, I get a one-second blip of a black box and nothing. From the startup menu, I can't even open "help and support" or the control panel.

I have a Dell Optiplex GX280 running Windows XP.

Any ideas??

sonicmolasses, Go to the link below and scroll down to line 12 (left column) and click on "EXE (lnk and regfile) Fix for Windows XP" to download a reg file fix. Save the REG File to your hard disk. Double click it and answer yes to the import prompt.

If you can't access the Internet use another computer to download it onto a floppy or CD and transfer it to the problem computer. If you can't run the file do the following:

Press CTRL-ALT-DEL and open Task Manager. Once there, click File, then hold down the CTRL key and click New Task (Run). This will open a Command Prompt window. Enter REGEDIT.EXE and press Enter. Once regedit is open click File>Import and locate that reg file fix, hilite it and click Open.

sonicmolasses, That was a .reg file which corrected the .exe and .lnk file associations to their default associations. Somehow your .exe & .lnk file associations got changed. It could have been a virus/trojan/malware that caused it or if you're using Lavasoft Ad-watch you may have left a registry change occur when Ad-watch prompted you.
Glad that the problem is corrected & Thanks for posting back.

I have similar problem....

I am having a similar issue, running Windows XP Home SP2. although I can't get most of my programs to run in safe mode either. If I have the problem you are describing, could that keep the programs from running in safe mode too?

I also can't get portable programs that are on a USB flash drive to run either. They are not installed on my PC in any way.

Every once in a while I can get a program to run once but then it won't the next time.

I also noticed that services in XP are not starting even though they are set to automatic. If I try to manually start them, I get an error saying that the services couldn't be started because the services didn't respond in a timely fashion.

Do you think I still have the registry issue or possibly something else?

Many thanks for your help.
