PLEASE HELP - Mouse Freezes/ Jumps/ Stalls - XP-Pro SP2

by NetKnockout / November 26, 2006 2:35 PM PST

I'm having a freezing/ sticking problem with my mouse! I have searched every where for an answer, and while I found many answers, I didn't find one that works...: (

I don't think it has anything to do with my actual mouse, as I have tried several different mice... The mouse gets "stuck" for a jiffy, (1/100th of a second) or two and then will free up, sometimes it just jumps around by it's self, scrolls pages at it's own will, and there are other times that it freezes and can only be unfroze by rebooting...

*This problem started about two weeks ago, and thus I tried using system restore to reset it three weeks back thinking I must have done something... Though, the problem is still here, unfortunately!!!

*I have done several virus scans, adware scans, registry scans, etc... I have ran defrag, checked the drivers, checked for device conflicts, etc., yet I cannot find a logical cause nor solution...

*I've checked the task manager, and I recognized all the running processes except one, OFFPROV.exe, though it checked out to be a legit program... I ended the OFFPROV.exe process anyhow, seeing how I had not seen it there before, but I still have my mouse issues!

*I've checked the system information which tells me that my mouse is working OK...(too bad that's not the truth)

*I checked the event viewer, and did find these two error messages, each several times:

The Computer Browser service terminated with the following error:
This operation returned because the timeout period expired.

The following boot-start or system-start driver(s) failed to load:
fasttx2k

Mouse Problems
by novicerover / November 27, 2006 5:24 AM PST

I had a identical problem and discovered my cure by chance.! The mouse mat had been replaced with a bright coluured one, which was also shiney.
I am using an optical mouse and noticed I did not have the problem when I knocked the mat on the floor and continued work on the desk top.
Often the cure is simple, hope it works for you !

I just had a similar problem. I think if its a ps/2 mouse, it may mean the ps/2 controller chip is on the fritz. It may start to affect your keyboard, if you keyboard dies out, this is right. You may want to try download the latest drivers for the keyboard and mouse.

Freezing system with Quicktime
by hub_cap / December 4, 2006 9:57 AM PST
In reply to: RE:

I have a similar system XPPro SP2, latest updates. When I install Quicktime or Quicktime Alt, the system freezes. I am using a USB mouse which works fine on two separate computers, so it is not a mouse problem. I have an ATI video card (Radeon 7500). Changing the resolution has no effect either.

Mouse Stalls

In reply to: RE:

I was having the same problem also. Tried troubleshooting and then unplugged the mouse from the port and plugged it back in. It's working fine now. I'm know this will not be a permanent fix, but at least it's a temporary one.

any solution to this yet?
by PPNSteve / April 24, 2007 3:11 AM PDT

Been having this same issue lately (seems to have started after a couple of NS updates, though I'm not really sure) with it seemly getting worse.. It's now freezing / locking / pausing tcp/ip connections as well.

The whole system just locks up for a 3-180 secs, mouse jumps / scroll to where ever it wants, connected apps disconnect, and them just as soon as it's happened all comes back to normal.

So.. has anyone yet figured out what's going on here? any solutions?

dell dim4700, win xp pro sp2, P4 2.8ht, 2.5GB RAM all latest MS updates, clean virus, spyware, trojan scans.
