Please help me choose....Toshiba or HP?

by punabutta8251 / April 14, 2006 9:46 AM PDT

Hi, I am currently in the market for a new laptop. I've narrowed my choices to the following two based on quality and bang for buck. What do you guys think? I'm not the greatest with computers, so if there are any other suggestions for no more than $1799CDN please feel free to add.

1) HP DV5040us w/ Windows Media Centre
AMD Turion 64x ML-40 with PowerNow, 15.4'', 2GB RAM, 100GB HD, 128MB ATI Dedicated graphics, DL DVD+/-RW and 6.6lbs

2) Toshiba Satellite A100 JH200
Intel Core Duo T2300, 15.4'', 1GB RAM, 100GB HD, 128MB dedicated ATI, DL DVD+/-R, 6.6lbs

Very similar systems, except for processor and ram, but the toshiba can max out a 4gb, but the HP has media centre and an RW drive which I find appealing.

What are your thoughts?

HP

Here's my opinion on this, and not really based on anything, other than my opinion. I much prefer HP over Toshiba because of the way Toshiba places certain keys, like the windows key, and the size/shape of the keys.

Other than that, there are your impressions of HP's Media Center, its DVD burning capabilities that you like.

If you are thinking of RAM, you REALLY don't need 4 GB on a laptop. Maybe in a few years, and my that time, your laptop would be out of date. Unless you are really thinking of doing extensive, CPU number crunching applications, you will do fine with AMD's Turion 64. Not to mention also that it is 64 bit ready. The Intel Duo is still 32 bit.

So, it seems to me that you like the HP more than the Toshiba anyways, but thats just what I think....=P

Hope that this helps in your decision, and good luck.

Any particular reason why you wouldn't suggest the satellite series? All of the other lines are above my my price range.
