Question

OS will not recognise external HDD

by nihoa / June 2, 2011 12:10 PM PDT

My HP Omnibook 500 with Windows ME will not recognise my external HDD. Also, it will only read SD cards from my USB card reader and not SDHC cards. Is there a fix for this? Thanks,

I have not seen any software updates to internal SD readers (for this model) so the cheap fix is as you found out.

As to the External HDD since most drives today are too large or in an incompatible format, there is no fix for that as well for this OS.

I did a FAT32 format on my external HDD and that corrected the problem. My 32-bit Windows ME now supports the entire 160gb external drive.

Now, as for my external USB memory card reader, I installed the driver which came with the reader. This corrected the problem. My OS can now read and write to the card reader. It even works with SDHC cards.

I hope this information will be a benefit to others.
