New Mac User - Ever-decreasing HDD space...?

by andy.webb / February 7, 2013 7:25 PM PST

Hi guys,

I only became a mac user in Aug 12 - when I sold 4 windows pcs and bought a rMBP. Bit confused about something and was hoping one of you might be able to point me in the right direction...

I'm hoping one of you will be able to explain why the HDD on my OS X partition is gradually getting filled. When I go to 'about this mac' it shows that 49.38GB of my partition is for 'other'.

Audio / Movies / Photos / Apps / Backups are only 45GB between all off them. So what is tacking up all my space!? Its certainly not my downloads or documents folder (finder "get info" suggests both of these together comprise only 1.5GB).

Any ideas?

Are you using Boot Camp?

Is the internal drive partitioned?

Did you partition it?

What version of OS X are you using?

Yes!

Thanks for replying!

Yeah, I'm using bootcamp - I have a partition (on which Windows 8 is installed) and one on which OS X (Mountain Lion) is sitting. The 'about this mac' has the two partitions and their free drive space listed separately.

The boot camp partition says 37.1 free, out of 150GB (which is about right, from what I have installed on Windows).

The OS X (ML) partition says 5.95GB free, out of 100GB.

So the total (250GB) is about right for the 256GB of SSD I have, and it appears to reflect the audio/apps/movies etc accurately. Its just the 'other' category of the OS X ML partition that has me confused!

Other covers a multitude of sins

In reply to: Picture

and, just a moment ago, I looked at my storage in "About this Mac" and was shocked to see only 12GB free out of 1TB!

That prompted a look through the documents folder where I found 88GB worth of DVD projects! Currently moving them to some other drive.

I would suggest that you go around your Home folder and see if you can find where the culprit(s) is/are hiding.
