Need Recommendations

by psrod / November 17, 2004 8:54 AM PST

Beginner here. Our first child is due after christmas, and I want to do the new dad thing and get a camcorder. I want to spend between 800 and 1000 on the camera. Want a digital camera that I will be able to record quality video, transfer to my laptop, do a little editing, and burn to DVD to share with the family. I think I want a compact recorder to take with us places.

I need a recommendation for the camera, software for the pc, and dvd drive for my laptop (dell 600m).

I'm totaly confused about all the formats and the pros and cons.

gee whiz, where did you find all that stuff??

hard to say what to get, it all depends on your use of the equipment. you might want to see what that is first before investing so heavily.

the 50 battery is plenty, shoots for almost 2 hours.

the cam should come with a mem stick and should be all you need, the stills from handicams are not very good anyway.

I use panasonic tape, works great and is less (altho i get it wholesale for $3 each!)

keep tapes in their cases!!!! and you shouldn't need a head cleaner very soon.

you can get a very decent tripod at a camera store for about $200.

the onboard mikes are pretty good, you only need the add'l mike for its better quality which you may not need for just fam pix. also those shotgun mikes get in the shot, you'll need a shoe extender.

Thanks, I just cut&paste the list from the sellers site. Battery, Tapes, and maybe a case/bag is all I think I need.
