Question

Mac Standard Account doesn't show desktop items

by JessGless / October 31, 2013 12:49 AM PDT

HELLO: I have a MacMini using a just-downloaded OS10.9 - Mavericks operating system.

After the download all files, etc. seem in order on the Admin account, however, for security I'm trying to get a Standard Account set up.

I just generated a new - Standard Account.
It works, however, it does not show items from my desktop from my Admin account - all of my Desktop files that I use.

Any suggestions? It has been a long time since I've played around with this.

Apple has its own set of forums and for bleeding edge work like this, I'm over there.

I'd head to Apple Forums on that. - New!

I guess I will have to go to Apple as I don't see
the HD Icon either. The one and only icon out of
all of those was to my external backup drive.

Before you do that,

Take a look at Finder Preferences on that Standard Account.

Check the General Setting and make sure that Hard Disks, External disks, CDs DVDs, and iPods and Connected Servers is checked.

It's a completely different account from the Admin Account

and therefore does not show any of the icons associated with that account.

All accounts created in OS X are independent of each other and do not share desktop items but do share access to the Applications folder.

You could copy all the desktop files that you use, as an Admin, into the Shared Folder and then, as the Standard Account, pull them from the Shared Folder to the Desktop.

Wasn't this true with prior versions?
by R. Proffitt Forum moderator / October 31, 2013 1:53 AM PDT

I didn't think it was that since prior versions seemed to not show icons per the rules you noted.
