low disk space error message

by greentie / July 11, 2010 9:58 AM PDT

Not too long ago and before I started having my current problems, a friend installed firefox, avast antivirus and adblocker on my pc that uses windows xp because I was having problems with some sort of virus(?)

As of late, I frequently get low disk space on my C drive messages telling me to delete old and unneccessary files. After which I have run disk cleanup upon the recommendation of friend. At first, running disk cleanup seemed to help. But now, it doesn't seem to help. It seems like the "compress old files" section of disk cleanup doesn't work maybe(?) even though that box is checked. After running disk cleanup the number of old files never decreases. I also deleted old restore points, as I read somewhere that that would free up some space which from what I can tell, didn't.

I just bought and installed an external hard drive today at the recommendation of a computer store salesperson in the hopes that that would help. And of course, it didn't. Still getting the same error messages. The last message I received I believe told me I have like 56 mb of space left.

Can anyone offer any suggestions here?? Would disk defragmenting help? Haven't done that. Or any settings I can adjust? I'd really appreciate some helpful suggestions.

disk space is actually remaining? Did you successfully remove the virus?

I just got rid of a boatload of old email and deleted all my pictures and "successfully resolved" my disk space issue which brought my disk space up to 320 mb which I realize isn't alot. I really don't have alot on my computer so I'm not sure why I am continually having this problem. Any suggestions??
