LG 55GA6400 Optical Out Sound Problem

by frogfuzion / June 30, 2013 10:44 PM PDT

PS3, Motorola STB into LG tv via HDMI.

Digital Optical Out sound from tv to Sony Playstation Soundbar. Tv speakers are turned off.

Problem: Sound will periodically cut out and quickly fade back in (few times an hour).

Troubleshooting so far:
-Tried 3 different optical cables
-Tried playstation and stb directly to sound bar (no problems with those)
-Took tv back - thought it was defective, same problem with new tv
-Called lg support, they replaced the board in the tv, Same problem

Still a problem. Could it be a compatibility issue between the soundbar and the tv? It can't be a coincidence that both tvs have the problem right?

I'm stumped. Any insight? Should i get another sound bar?

when you set (or turn off) the surround modes of the LG or Sony or both to just stereo?

I'm not sure that the sony has a surround mode. The sony is set to stereo setting and the LG is set to "auto" with 5.1 and pcm as options. I have tested changing both of those settings and nothing was resolved.

I'll check for surround settings.

set LG to pcm and it still happens, the Sony is not decoding the LG consistently. Try a different soundbar.

I was able to resolve the issue.

For some reason the issue was only with the combination of this sound bar and this tv...

When i got a new soundbar (sony ht-ct150) the problem no longer occurred.

I must reiterate that the old soundbar worked fine with other input devices... just this combination of LG GA6400 was the problem.
