Least Expensive Cell Phone Service

by VermontChef / November 15, 2007 1:15 AM PST

I just got back from Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, where I found my cell phone worked and cost no more than the regular rate. I could call other phones in PV and also call the USA, same rate. My cell phone service is Tracfone, and costs me about $8.00 a month, including all taxes. It works just about everywhere in the US,too. Anyone who has a phone at home, one at work, and who doesn't need phone help to shop or cross the street can save a lot of money. Right now you can get a phone with 3 months service for $29.99 (12 minutes) or get a year for $99.99 (450 minutes) and you only pay sales tax and not the $20 or more in phone taxes. you can get extra months for $5.95 ($6.30 with tax) and extra minutes if you need them. If you need more talk time, get the "double minutes for life" which cuts the cost in half.
Why does this inexpensive service get absolutely no respect? It never even gets a mention when comparing phone services. Are you all conspirators for the phone companies? (LOL)

TracFone
by MeanDonnaJean / November 16, 2007 8:40 AM PST

When I finally broke down and purchased a cell phone for both me and my young son some years back, I began my wireless mania with TracFone. I was very happy with all aspects of their service.....until my son became a teenager that is.....and thats when all hell broke loose. Prior to my son's teenaged blabfests, I had been a TracFone customer for a good 2 years or so. But then I noticed that the kid was goin' thru minutes like there was no tomorrow and that I always ended up payin' at least a minimum of $80 a month for just his cell phone alone, nonetheless the money I was spendin' on minutes for MY phone as well. So with that in mind, and knowin' that my days of payin' for monthly cellphone charges was just beginnin' with my dearest newly-teenaged son, I decided that I could probably spend significantly less money elsewhere with a monthly plan. So after doin' a couple months of research thats exactly what I did and thats exactly what I got....a plan for the both of us which gave us more minutes for less money.....and which made the BOTH of us happy. These days, I hardly ever use MY cellphone...but I reckon I don't gotta tell ya the amount of time a teenager spends on THEIR cellphone....so its the best thing for us at this point in time. However, someday, maybe someday, when the kid is grown and on his own and is payin' his OWN way, I may just go back to that ol' TracFone habit of mine. Hey, ya never know!

You are correct about the cost but pray that you never have to call customer service. A word to the wise, do not purchase tracfone unless you can get by with about 800 units a year. I have been with tracfone for a few years and if you ever require a new sim card I wish you luck. About a year ago the sim went bad and it took over a month to get a new one.. At the present I've purchased a new phone and they told me that the sim that's in the phone is not compatible with my area.(Florida). I have been waiting over a month and still no card....
Yes, Tracfone is the least expensive but their customer service is trash.
