Resolved Question

Keeping PUP's off Windows 7

by spearshaker / September 21, 2013 9:14 AM PDT

I keep getting extra search engines and Potentially Unwanted Programs. I can accept the adware tracking from Chrome, but do not want mydial, AVG etc that have started being added. I suspect it comes from downloading a solitaire program (now that MS doesn't seem to include them). Any ideas (other than Malwarebytes and Superspyware (and not downloading solitaire, of course)?

response to questions on Windows 7 and Mydial etc
by spearshaker / September 22, 2013 11:51 AM PDT

a) new laptop from HP with Windows 7 professional
b) removed mysearchdial from programs the first time, but it no longer shows up in programs, despite showing up in when I go online on (Google is my preferred search engine; do not intentionally use others); now have AVG search in addition to mysearchdial and IE...
c) unable to locate mysearchdial on extensions etc
d) regarding solitaire, found "games" but all I found turned out to be links. treecardgames was what I used initially and first noted mycsearchdial... but there may not be any connection

and finally, my apologies for delay in responding... for some reason I was unable to sign into CNET earlier.

Why are you downloading Solitaire?
by wpgwpg / September 22, 2013 1:07 PM PDT

Windows 7 comes with Solitaire, Freecell, and Spider Solitaire, so why are you downloading Solitaire? Since you have the Professional version of Windows 7, it defaults to not installing them. However all you have to do is to go to the Programs and Features applet of the Control Panel and turn them on. Then you don't have to download them. That would seem to solve at least a good part of your problem.

That solved the games problem...

Very much appreciated. Now I can tackle the mysearchdial problem and have something to ease my frustration!

You really need.

To check which boxes come prechecked. Stay away from this free toolbar and this free scan etc.

MBAM AND SAS can help but some have to be removed manually.

In reply to: You really need.

got notification from MBAM (after I removed the Solitaire game) of 10 pups. Removed them and mydial etc are back again. I like Chrome because of the speedy connections, but am beginning to wonder if it is worth the hassle. BTW, carefully removing check boxes did not seem to be helpful. But, glad to see I am not the only person who knows about this...

Did you have a dial up connection maybe for games?

In reply to: Mydial.

I don't know which OS you're using but you need to go to add remove programmes and unistall anything to do with mydial. Next (I don't use Chrome) go to tools extensions/plugins and disable or remove mydial.

Hope this helps,

You say Windows 7 but say no games
by wpgwpg / September 22, 2013 2:31 AM PDT

Windows 7 DOES have Solitaire, Freecell, Spider Solitaire and others, my Windows 7 Home Premium has 14 games included. However you say MS no longer provides games which implies Windows 8, so I'm confused as to which version we're talking about here. With Windows 8 I use 123Free Solitaire which contains no malware. You can download it from http://www.treecardgames.com . I also use Chrome on several PCs and don't have the problems you describe with it. I would check for add-ons because they don't show up in the Programs and Features applet of the Control Panel. Also be very careful about where you download from. Download.com used to be a trusted site, but I've seen (and experienced) dozens of complaints about them adding malware to what you download so don't use it.
Good luck.

I am only one grade above computer illiterate

Only programs I intentionally added were Chrome, Malwarebytes and Superantispyware, as well as bringing Officer 2007 student from my old computer, and from original disc, Dragon Naturally Speaking. I readily acknowledge I might have missed a checked box, but I do look and avoid. Now that one reader has told me how to find Solitaire, I may be able to clean everything up with a swift removal of Chrome and reload being EXTRA careful to look at those boxes. \\
Thanks to everyone for the great ideas.\\

Are you referring to "MySearchDial"?

Yes and that didn't work
by spearshaker / September 22, 2013 12:10 PM PDT

I have tried the Chrome removal (extensions) and mysearchdial does not show up there. Having been using Adwcleaner each time I first clear out the PUP's with Malwarebytes....

Light bulbs you shouldn't buy

There are plenty of dimmable LED light bulbs, but make sure you don't buy the ones that flicker when you dial them down.
