Is a virtual wifi router or a router better?

by sylvia929 / February 23, 2014 6:42 PM PST

Hi guys, I downloaded a software( its name is My WIFI Router This software can turn my laptop to a virtual wifi hotspot. It runs great. All my portable device , such as iphone, ipad, can connect to the internet built by this software.

I want to learn: is it safe to use this software to create a wifi hotspot? Should I need to buy a router?

Thank you in advance!

How is your laptop itself connected to the Internet?

I don't use that one.

I've used Virtual Router as it's open source and doesn't include other apps. Here it is:

The thing is that we have 2 issues here.

1. What you linked to may have unwanted apps attached.
2. A router is always better but if you know what you are doing and it works, plus you know no one supports a virtual router then this is good for you.

You are always safer with a wifi router.

Your router acts as a firewall. Your router is a device on the internet that has an IP address. Your devices behind that firewall have their own IP addresses behind the firewall of the router. Only the router IP address is visible on the network and if it's password protected your safer.

Using a virtual router would the IP of the PC connected to the internet directly IP address would be visible to the internet.
