"Apple has limited this feature to locking the orientation in portrait mode only,"

This is not a feature I've seen today. Maybe they'll add it later.

Answer
Try this
by mrmacfixit Forum moderator / September 15, 2013 9:55 AM PDT

Double click the Home Button.
This shows you the Fast App Switcher.
Swipe from left to right until you see the music player app. You will recognize it by the controls.
On the left of the controls there is an icon with a circular arrow.
If there is a padlock in the middle of the arrow, screen rotation is locked.
Tap it to unlock it.

If screen rotation is locked, you will see an icon at the top right of the screen, to the left of the battery indicator and the Bluetooth icon.
Icon there, screen rotation locked, no icon = no lock

That help?

I must be doing it wrong but the lock screen with the slide seems to be locked too.

That screen does not rotate,
by mrmacfixit Forum moderator / September 15, 2013 9:55 PM PDT

although it does on the iPad.

I presumed the OP was referring to other screens and not the "slide to unlock" page

I see they needed the normal rotate.

The lock screen rotation comes up once in a while. I see they didn't ask that here.
