IE version I have on a Windows XP PC

by Big Steve / November 4, 2009 5:11 AM PST

How or where would I go to check to see which version of IE I have on my desktop PC with Windows XP? I recently upgraded from IE7 to IE8 on my Windows Vista laptop but I've been on the desktop a lot today and several sites I've gone to have said I need to upgrade or update my browser and before I upgrade my browser will I have to uninstall my current one or will the new version of IE just install right over my older one? Would Belarc Advisor be a good place to start to find out which version of IE I currently have on this 3 year old Dell Dimension 3100 desktop PC?

Big Steve, Just open Internet Explorer, click on Help (at the top Menu Bar), click "About Internet Explorer" and it will show which version you are using.

I'm reading this on my Vista laptop which I'm just curious, looking for a help button here, can't locate one but I will go check the desktop which has Windows XP. I was reading some of the comments in this forum, problems some are having with IE8, I now have IE8 on this laptop, I've been receiving lots of messages saying IE is not working, closing now, could those messages be related to IE8?

I never received messages like that on this computer, the laptop while I was using IE7. If I find out I have IE6 on my desktop could I move up to IE7 or should I move to IE8? Would I need to uninstall IE6 before upgrading to IE7 or IE8 or will the newer version install right over the older version?
