i downloaded avast + malwarebytes and now comp won't update

by Danibnunes / April 26, 2012 5:50 AM PDT

I downloaded Avast yesterday, turned my computer firewall on (WIndows firwall with advanced security) and downloaded malwarebytes-Anti malware, all of which are running. I uninstalled all norton symantic programs I had on here as well. I had about a month were norton had expired and I wasn't running anything.

I have a hp paviolion dm4 and am runiing windows 7.

My computer will not allow me to download anything. Not even critical window updates, which is rendering my usb port inoperable for some things i regularly use bc I can not download the device drivers. Also, for some reason, videos I played last night aren't playing bc I no longer have flash player, and I need to download it, which of course I can not. HELP please. I have finals in4 days and need to watch some educational (lecture) videos. I don't want to have to go to an overpriced shop down the road to fix this.

Also, I have already tried all the windows reccommneded trouble shooting steps including turning off avast and turning off windows firewalls. I ran the microsoft MR fix it from their website and it wouldn't run once it got past a certain point.

In case you hadn't seen ..

In case you hadn't seen my response to your post at the SV&S forum, it was necessary to lock the thread.

As noted, duplicate posts creates a duplication of work, along with confusion. It really is in your best interest, to only submit ONE post .. in ONE forum.

Also note in the reply, where it's indicated to include which versions of Avast and MBAM you have installed.

Thanks for your understanding and future co-operation.

Disable MBAM. You don't need that running in the background all the time as it might conflict with Avast. Just run it once a week or so to update it and run a manual scan. Reboot after you have disabled it and see if that fixes the problem.

Next, firewall. I'm confused. You only just turned on the Windows Firewall? Does this version of Avast have a firewall included? If so, turn off the Windows Firewall. You don't need both.

If Avast does not have its own firewall, then as a test, turn off the Windows firewall anyway and see if that solves the problem. Don't forget to turn it back on if that is all you have.

Norton.Did you uninstall Norton before or after installing Avast? Norton is known for causing problems when its license has expired so you would do well to download and run Norton's own Uninstaller from here;

If you still can't download anything, get that file downloaded on another machine and then transfer it across. It may be that Norton's own firewall is still working in the background.

See if all that helps.
