I cannot download anything in IE or Firefox

by shadowfire87 / November 1, 2009 3:07 AM PST

I have helped a friend upgrade her Toshiba Satellite model PSLC0U-01S01F laptop to Win7 premium 32bit from vista. After installation, in IE8, I can initiate a file download and it will proceed to DL the file but upon finishing, the file disappears from the saved location. I then installed Firefox from a flash drive without issue but when I DL a file in Firefox, it also proceeds to DL the file but upon the end produces an invalid file with 0 bytes. Any help on this matter will be greatly appreciated.

At times the file can be there before you remove/clean the cache for the browsers.

Have you checked to make sure your account is the admin and that you have rights established to download items?

The account is admin. I am not certain on the DL rights. How do I check that? I know that the rights on the folder, where I DL'ed the file, is allow on everything.

Thanks Ron - It was something simple!

Hi Ron, and Everyone else,

Unlike Win XP, Win 7 does not shout from the mountain tops about activating windows. It turns out that I did not activate Win 7 when I thought I did. It seems (although this is not official) that you cannot DL ANY files on a non activated copy of Win 7 but an installed program can DL updates and install them. With that said, I activated her copy and she now has downloading bliss. I have not tried to test, on a non activated copy, downloading a file by way of proxy, but it would be nice to try. Make certain that your copy of Win 7 is activated by going to the System properties and scrolling to the bottom. It will let you know how many days you have until must activate.

Never heard of Download Rights. How did MicroSoft Windows
acquire the rights to interfere with someone's download capability ?

Cannot Download Anything with Windows 7
by KenFromMS / June 19, 2011 1:39 PM PDT

I noticed this was a 2009 post. It is now 2011 and I am having the same problem. The problem appears to come and go. Seems one time I solved the problem by deleting the Orbit Download program. This Windows 7 defect has rendered my computer useless. Still no solution ?

Please start a new thread, (in only one forum to start with as it gets confusing jumping from one forum to another) and give us more information about your problem, the computer, etc.

Here's a link to the other forum response:

Hope this helps.
