Question

I can only connect to the internet when my roommate does

by imaginaryfruit / February 10, 2014 8:40 AM PST

My computer often has trouble connecting to the internet. It will either connect to the router but not the internet, or it will keep connecting and disconnecting to/from the router.

When my roommate turns on her computer and connects it to the internet, suddenly my computer connects without further problems.

Any ideas why this might be?

I'm using Ubuntu, she's using Windows, and we're both connecting to comcast wifi.

Does it work at other hotspots?

Also, you didn't reveal who set it up or the settings. Tell more or I fear you'll have to let Comcast fix ti.

Yes, it works fine elsewhere

Yup, I never have problems connecting my laptop to other wifi hotspots.

It also *usually* works fine on our home wifi whether or not my roommate's computer is on. But when I'm having trouble connecting (which happens once or twice a week), about 80% of the time connecting her computer to the internet first solves my problem.

It was set up by our neighbours -- we share -- which also means I don't have easy access to the router...

What other settings are important to report?

Ahh.

Well then unless we can reboot the modem and router I can't say it's your laptop as it works elsewhere. Could be any number of things but if you recall that Vista and Apple issue with routers my bet turns to some outdated router firmware.
