How to remove Avast virus prtotection from my HP Touchsmart

I downloaded Avast some time ago, but need to remove it from my PC and I cannot. When I try to uninstall in Control Panel I get a message "Error: a setiface error has occurred 536870929 Try to re-install"
I cannot reinstall and just want Avast off my computer. If I go to program files and try to delete the Avast (Alwil) file, I get message: You need permission". It's very annoying.
I am operating on Windows Vista 64 bit and Have a HP Touchsmart PC. I unchecked the user account permission box in control panel from the get go.

Why can't you reinstall?

Just deleting the folder in Program Files is risky, I'd say.
