How to change D drive to C Drive !!!

by sanagapalli / September 9, 2004 2:41 AM PDT

Hi Folks,

I had two hard disks one is C (40GB)installed linux (not working) and D (120GB) windows XP. I want to make D as C and C as D drive. How can I do that. Right now when I started my computer I am getting an option of which operating systems I have to select which is coming in Mandrake LINUX way. I have to select option Windows XP other wise will go to Linux which is not working.

My problem if I want to install any software on Windows XP(which is Drive D) some of the installation files are trying to copy to C drive and there is no space to copy finally not able to install stuff. Because of different reasons I want to convert D drive as C Drive and Cdrive as Drive.

Thanks for any help

change D drive to C Drive !!! = No supported method

It's a common complaint since Windows NT arrived. No tool or supported method existed except to wipe the drive and install XP again.

On a dual boot system Windows loads Ntld (O/S loader), Boot.ini (files that specifies the paths to xp and shows boot option menu), bootsec.dos (Boot sector of other O/Ss'), ntbootdd.sys (for non BIOS devices), ntoskml.exe (Xp kernel) plus some others on the primary partition (C). Remove any of these and system will not boot. Format this drive and their is no recovery.

You may be able to connect the 40 gig drive (for now only this drive) to the primary IDE controller, boot with CD to recovery console and attempt to fix/rebuild MBR - boot.ini. Back up your data first, this may not work.

Or do a clean install of XP on "C" drive. As your O/S is on the primary partition the 120 gig drive can be formated and the boot.ini file can be modified to stop boot menu option.
