How do I update an app when I have limited space

I have an LG Optimus Android phone and needd to update several apps but have limited space even sending some apps to the SD card. My map app and several others need to be updated. Anything short of rooting it would be helpful.

Only solution .....

.....that I can think of is deleting some apps/pictures/songs/videos from the phone. Short of adding a larger media card, you cannot upgrade the internal memory of the phone.

My old method.

Delete the old, install the new. DO NOT "UPDATE". An update can use more space during the update.

Wait a minute. This sounds like we did that on Windows. Arrrrrrggg.
