The usual suggestion is to either put the old hard drive in an external case or just connect it to another port on the new machine. You just boot the new machine to the new OS and pick off what you can from the old drive. For the most part, your stuff should be in folders associated with your username. Good luck.
okay. had a hitachi desk star for years. started giving me the click of death so i wrote it off but never discarded it.
for whatever reason i can't afford new hardware or a new pc for that matter.
i ended up with an optiplex gx620 running upstairs as it doens't take up as much space as my desktop which really doesn't work anymore. i don't do any gaming anymore. just internet tasking and a couple crappy facebook games to pass the time.
i switched out the hard drive in the optiplex for the desk star just to see what would happen.
it boots up just fine (no clicking) i get to the login screen (running xp pro 32 bit) but the mouse shuts off and so does the kb not letting me type or do anything
i only kept the drive because it has all my music and about 6000+ pictures i have taken. all i really want is the pics as i have spotify now so the music isn't really that big of a deal.
i want to get the pics off because i want to get back into college for photography and i could really use those pictures. a lot of them are of my ex and i would really like to have them and be able to give her a copy of them as i am quite proud of them. i trudged through a lot of mud and muck to get my animal pics too and it really sucks losing all of that
anything i can do. if i hook this drive up to my other computer as it were a second drive just to recover the data, it won't even get to the windows screen. but hooking it as the only drive on the optiplex lets it boot up but not on my other computer even as the only hard drive.
i tried posting to toms hardware but for whatever reason no one wants to help me (or with any question which is strange)
