Hijacked email contact list and sending out bulk spam!

For the second time in the last week, my email address has been hijacked, and spam has been sent out to everyone on my contact list. I don't have my email address visible on any webpages and I'm generally very careful about signing up for anything that requires it. I checked with Spybot and AVG and both show no signs of bots of viruses on my machine. AVG's auto-update expired 2 days ago, so I'm thinking maybe something is exploiting that.

Here's the message:

As you can see from all the spelling mistakes and poor English, it's your average spam. The website takes you to a Chinese imitation of e-bay.

How can I protect my contact list from these attacks?
