Question

Floppy drive

by duke0315 / December 17, 2012 10:20 PM PST

My new PC, HP Pavillion, says the floppy drive will only use DVD discs. Will this read CDs? It will not burn CDs? It will read & burn DVDs? Help. Thanks

Is there more to this story?

As supplied it looks like this PC did have CD and DVD authoring capability (burning to most.)

Is there more to this story like someone re-installed the OS or is this PC not new? Ebay or corner curb?

- Floppy drives only read and write floppies (diskettes).
- CD-ROM drives read CD's
- CD-RW drives read and write CD's
- DVD-ROM drives read CD's and DVD's
- DVD-RW drives read and write CD's and DVD's.

Since you didn't tell the details of what you have, we can't tell you the details of what it will do.

When I check my hardware in systems, it says DVD/CD-ROM. I don't know if this was in your answer. Thanks

That's what I called DVD-ROM. It reads CD's and DVD's, but you can't burn them, it seems.

But the name is not always correct. Most new machine come with a burner and a burning program. Do you have a link to the system specifications so we can see what you bought?

You are right with the 1st sentence. That is exactly what I am experiencing using my floppy drive. Thanks

However, it must be able to burn DVD's?

No Floppy drive made burns or reads DVDs.

I thought Kees covered that nicely. And until we get some make/model of the PC or the drive, it's clearly a read only drive.

It is a Pavillion P6-2021 PC. On the label it reads DVD burner. Who would want a floppy drive that would not both read & write?

If that's a requirement, it seems you didn't buy the thing you need. Back to the shop maybe?

Or do you mean something other than "it must". For example "I'm being told" or "I supposed" or "the user manual says". In all those cases, it's back to the shop also.

And we can't fully exclude the option that it can burn but you're not doing it the right way. But then also the sales person in the shop will be able to tell you how to do it.

You didn't tell what you bought, you didn't tell what you did. So how can we possibly help you?

The burn program is installed. I have only used CD's on my old computer and could not understand why they didn't work on my new PC. I need to purchase the right DVD's for this new computer. Thanks.

About the old CDs. We have reasons for that issue.

The most common is the owner used a "packet writing recording software." These result in CD and DVD recordable media that rarely works on any other PC.

Just like the details needed above, we'd have to know more to understand why you can't read this on the new PC.
