How old is that flash drive?
by wpgwpg / October 11, 2013 11:38 PM PDT

Flash drives do eventually wear out, usually after a lot of use. I'd try to see if maybe it would work in another PC. If you ever get to the files, be sure to copy them to another device!
Good luck.

Have you done a scan on the system? If the FD is/was infected the infection had to come from somewhere, that would be the first place to start. If the FD is infected scan it on a clean system with a strong A/V software package, preferably in Safe Mode With Networking and attempt clean up. But the first thing would be to scan the suspected system otherwise the infection may persist, this could be acheived with something like Malwarebytes loaded to a clean flash drive from a clean computer with system booted to Safe Mode w/networking.
