Feedback on this audio recording?

by Chandeliho / March 10, 2013 1:59 AM PST

I just tried out my new Sennheiser PC230 headset and I think that the quality is awful. Here's my recording.

Am I being too finicky, or is it really a poor quality mic? I don't want to end up sending back a perfectly good microphone and then buying a more expensive one and realizing it's the same quality.

So yeah, feedback?

Keep in mind that it's a $50 headset

You won't be getting any sort of stellar microphone at that price point, unfortunately.

Gotta spend more.

Define stellar..

Agh. I figured that $50 would at least be adequate. I don't need something top-of-the-line, especially since I don't know how successful the videos will be yet. The main problem is the fuzz/rumble you can hear between words. That's the only improvement I absolutely need from this one.

Any suggestions at a $100 cap? If not, then the closest to $100 you can think of?

Still not enough $

From your comments in your youtube clip, you don't have the budget for the type of mic you need/want. As you pointed you, there's often not a ton of difference at that $20-50 price point. $50 more won't mean much, honestly. The next level up from Sennheiser will likely provide slightly better results though. ($200-300)

What you could also do for kicks is try the same headset with a different PC. I've encountered noise issues with some computers while others did not introduce any such rogue noise.

For an even more radical idea/solution, you could consider buying a separate, high quality mic separate from the headset.

Seriously, $200 for something somewhat decent? It's not that I don't have the budget, exactly, but I just can't justify spending that kind of money on a headset. Even a top-notch one, and it sounds like the ones in that price range aren't even the best, just kinda better than really cheap ones.

Would a high-quality standalone mic be in my price range? Again, I don't even need something oh my god wow, just... pick up my voice properly.

It might

A friend of mine bought a Yeti microphone, and likes it. That one connects via USB (I think). There's likely better out there for less $$, which would connect to the traditional 3.5mm jack. Read the amazon reviews to see real user feedback.

I see the Yeti. Here's what a friend uses as well.

A Sanyo ICR-XPS01M. They like it since they can go into their sound booth in the garage without carrying in a laptop.
