External drive is turning off frequently and starts again..

by mahendramahendra / January 30, 2006 10:18 PM PST

Hi All,

I'm having a problem with external hard drive. I have made this external hard drive by attaching seagate 160GB hard disk with extern drive enclosure 3.5.

This drived worked well for some time, but now this is not working well.
When I connect the usb cable to my windows XP dell laptop, the light on external drive goes off and comes frequently... sometimes it goes off for long time and also the hard drive noise.

I'm not able to carry on any activity on this drive at the moment..

Has any one faced this kind of problem ? why does this drives goes off frequently ? could any one please help.

Thanks & regards,

External drive is turning off frequently and starts again..

You say that ''it worked well'' so I'm going to assume that xp sees the drive, it was formated (maybe partitioned) and a letter was assigned to it. Did you turn off indexing?... What light are you talking about... the activity or the power?... explain the noise (fan noise? clicking noise? etc)

problem with the external hard drive

Thanks for your reply.

No I didn't turn of indexing. I'm talking the light of external drive. For last 1 year it was working fine.

Here is the actual problem :

If I don't connect the usb cable to windows and switch on the external driver, it switches on, I can see the power light ON in front of the external driver, and there is no noise from the hard disk, i assume this is because drive is not doing any processing because it is not connected to the windows.

Now if I connect the usb cable of external drive to windows, then the power light of external drive gets turned on and off for every few minutes, along with the light hard disk noise also goes off and on every few minutes... means either power not going or hard disk is stopping from working...

I'm just wondering what could be the problem.

I'd buy a new USB 2.0 drive enclosure and move the hard disk to it's new home.

light on and off

the light on the external should goes on (solid) when it receives juice... and blinks when it has activity.

About indexing... turn on the external... open windows explorer... RIGHT click on the drive for the external... properties... general... at bottom is the tick ON next to "Allow indexing..."? if it is... take it OFF
This may be the reason for the constant activity.
Now click of the hardware tab... mark (click ONCE) from the list the external... click on properties...
does it say 0 in location... if it does... GOOD.

Just my 2 cents, hope they are of help
