Question

Eco mode doesn't seem to work on CLX-4195FW

by MadDogMikeATL / May 15, 2013 2:04 AM PDT

I keep the Eco mode on by default on my CLX-4195FW, and I have the Eco configuration Color settings set for Grayscale. However, when I print the printer seems to disregard these settings, printing in high-quality color instead. Am I missing something?

Hi MadDogMikeATL,

OK, I'd like to check where you set this function. Did you go to: Menu > System Setup > Machine Setup > Eco Settings

From the touch-screen I just touch Eco > Settings > Default Mode: On

Hi MadDogMikeATL,

OK, thanks for clarifying it. So what have you done so far to try to fix this? Have you uninstalled and reinstalled the drivers or the Easy Print Manager software?

When I check the Easy Print Manager software on my Macbook Pro, it actually confirms that Eco is set to default On. I installed the software on a second Macbook and the behavior is the same. Further, I would think whatever is set on the touch-screen for default settings should control, regardless of driver/software on the computer.

Hi MadDogMikeATL,

OK, the product specialist tested this for me. Allow to explain what's going on: Eco mode on the printer itself will save toner as the default when you're receiving a fax or copying. However, whatever the print property settings are in your computer, these will override the settings on the printer itself.

Based on this, let's check to make sure you're using the most recent driver on your Mac. You can find the most recent driver for your Mac here: http://www.samsung.com/us/support/owners/product/CLX-4195FW/XAC

How to update / confirm driver version?
by MadDogMikeATL / May 24, 2013 6:19 AM PDT

You wrote, "However, whatever the print property settings are in your computer, these will override the settings on the printer itself."
But ast I previously wrote, "When I check the Easy Print Manager software on my Macbook Pro, it actually confirms that Eco is set to default On."

So in either case, the printer should be printing in Eco mode. So I tried updating the driver using the link you provided. That links says the current version is 5.0. I installed and received confirmation that the installation was successful. However, after checking System Preferences > Print & Scan > Samsung CLX-4190 Series > Options & Supplies, it shows Driver Version 1.0.

What am I missing?

Hi MadDogMikeATL,

Sorry that I was unclear. I realize that you said earlier that "When I check the Easy Print Manager software on my Macbook Pro, it actually confirms that Eco is set to default On." Therefore, yes, it should be working.

The reason I asked you to make sure we're on the latest driver was that perhaps there was something fixed in a newer driver version. So let's do this; please reset the printing system: http://www.samsung.com/us/support/howtoguide/N0000189/9322/113402/CLX-4195FW/XAC

Then download the driver and install it and re-setup you printer.

Banging my head against the wall now

Yeah, I did all that. It still prints in color despite being set to Eco On and Grayscale.

Further, you stated that print property settings on my computer override the settings on the printer itself. I don't see any way to even SET those settings on my computer. When I open the Easy Print Manager software, it will only SHOW me what is already set on the printer. It does not let me CHANGE those settings, only VIEW them.

Yet again, those settings are ignored and the printer prints in color wasting expensive toner.

Hi MadDogMikeATL,

OK then, let's check this: go open a file that has not been printing with those settings. Hit command + P. You should have the print dialog appear. On the lower left of the dialog, click show details. Open the dropdown box that has the name of the program you're using listed. Go down to graphics and select it. What is the quality and color mode listed there?

In reply to: Re: Much simpler then

After clicking "Show Details" in the print dialog, I don't see a dropdown box with the name of the program. Here is a screenshot of what I see.

Anyway, I can look in every dropdown box there and there's no option to select Eco.

Just an idea to work around this

Since all Apples I've used can make PDFs what if you print to a PDF and make that greyscale? Then you can check the PDF to see if it took and then print the PDF?

Not what I'm seeking
by MadDogMikeATL / May 24, 2013 3:34 PM PDT

1.) We don't really have to print all of our documents to PDF and then print them to paper.
2.) Even if we did, that still doesn't address the Eco mode not working. It's not just about printing without color it's about saving toner - black toner, too!

I knew that.

But until it's sorted I thought I'd toss out something I used to work around this when such features were not available. Good luck with the issue and hope it's sorted soon.

Toner saving mode

In reply to: I knew that.

Thanks, but a much easier work-around is to just select black & white on the software I'm printing from (Preview, Chrome, Pages, etc.) That saves the color toner, but doesn't get the black toner-saving mode that I'm seeking.

My MacBook Pro is running 10.8.3. I think my wife's MacBook is running 10.7.something (I don't have it with me right now.) Maybe you guys need to push out an update?
