downloading MS .NET framework 3.5 problems?

by lowewilliamcou812 / July 6, 2008 5:24 AM PDT

I'm using a dialup connection. I'm running a compaq v5000 dual core, 1gb ram 100gb hd laptop with win xp sp2.
I'm trying to download the net framework 3.5 after a system crash and my backup let me down badly.
The problem is this:
In the download and install window, the "total Download Progress" amount changes erratically. 20 minutes ago it said 5mb out of 63; 10 minutes ago it said 2mb out of 63; now it says 27mb out of 63. How can the numbers bounce around like that?? Does this indicate the download is not working properly?
Thanks

What about the regular updates from MS
by bus / July 7, 2008 1:25 AM PDT

I ran my XP laptop for 2 years without the net framework installed. I had to replace the HDD when I got the laptop and did not
want to put anything in it till I knew I had it fixed. Yes I did finally install net framework and found it was something I wanted, but it was not a must have.

So what happened? Did you lose the HDD or did you have a crash which damaged the computer's OS to the point the computer would not work?

You said.

Not sure what is going on. 63MB download with a 56K modem getting 40kbits per second would take about 26 minutes to do the download, at 5Kbs it would take 3 and a half hours (I hope I got the math correct). What you maybe seeing is the connection speed changing, causing the status of the download to swing up and down.

Next time try

Making sure the phone line cord is undamaged and the jack is clean (unplug and plug in the phone line jack is usually enough to improve function).

Right click on the modem tray icon and then click on details to watch to see if the speed is fluctuating.

.Net download
by lowewilliamcou812 / July 7, 2008 5:18 PM PDT

Hi,

Thanks for replying!

No the phone line is fine. But it is a dialup and yes it is scheduled for in excess of 2 hours.

As far as the total download goes, I've checked the numbers and I'm not watching the download speed, it is actually the total downloaded.

I need to run a program which requires the .Net framework that's why Im loading it.
Thanks.

All I can think of

All I can think of is that you are downloading more than one file at the same time.

It's a good theory, but it falls down because you say the file size is always 63. I guess that means 63MB and that means there is just one file, unless there is a big coincidence, and the different files are the same size.

Some time has passed now since your original post so can I assume the download has completed now? If not, what is the status?

What happens when you attempt to download other 'single' files?

Mark

The same problem here.

The same problem here. Big companies have totally forgotten people with low speed of connection. If they gave us the direct download link even the dialup can finish it after some hours. But the preinstaller I think is the problem with this download. It restarts the download repeatedly.

Now there is another standalone installer which is 230 mb but in this dialup connection it is out of question. No solution I think. But anyone that knows how to proceed with this please ...

Why update at all over dial up?

And there is a full installer package if you search for it but why do this at all?

Do you really need it?
