Question

Does my Samsung Plasma TV PN51D550C1F support ARC?

by Movie_Ari / November 17, 2012 7:12 AM PST

I'm trying to connect my 3d TV (Samsung PN51D550C1F) to my Onkyo HT-S3500 AV. My question is can I pass 5.1 sound from OTA broadcast from my TV using ARC (via HDMI) over to my AV?

Yes, I can't specifically find the feature but it does say it supports HDMI 1.4, who's only upgrade from 1.3 was ARC.

Where does it call out ARC?

I can see why a maker would call out 1.4 HDMI since almost all cables are that today and if they didn't then consumers would be asking if 1.4 cables would work.

ARC is something you know not to expect to work. I learned that a few years back but folk continue to get burned as they think it should work.

I just learned about ARC when I bought my AV, figured it was worth a shot. Guess it doesn't support it despite being a relatively new TV.

Is there any other way to pass sound from the TV over to the AV?

Yes.

I use the optical output from the TV to the receiver. The link I provided is very odd in that I can't find a manual. But it does appear to have optical digital out.

Hi Movie_Ari,

You're right. It's HDMI 1.4, and fortunately, we don't partially adopt spec of HDMI on a version. So I can confirm you have ARC. It's part of Anynet+, our branding of HDMI-CEC. If you need help with setting it up, just ask.
