Does Canon 35mm lens fit Canon EOS Digital Rebel XT?

by CAT_GS / September 5, 2006 6:01 AM PDT

I have additional Tamron for Canon AF lenses from my Canon Rebel X 35mm camera, will they also fit the Canon EOS Digital Rebel XT?

Since you did not specify the exact lenses you have, there is no way anyone can say "yes or no".

Here is a link to some Tamron lenses that will definitely work on the Digital Rebel:

Scroll down to the Canon section.
Look to the right column.
Scroll down to Tamron.
Click on any of the lenses for a review.

Remember....the Digital Rebel will see the focal length differently than the 35mm camera:
A lens rated at 90mm focal length will appear to be 144mm focal length when on the Digital Rebel.
(multiply the focal length by 1.6).

If the Canon lenses are EOS, they will work.

If not, you can ask Canon. If you tell us the type, then someone may know.

According to people who have called Canon, asking for this type of information:

Canon will not tell you if it will work.
They will refer you to Tamron.

Ah! I missed it. I thought he/she said they had older Canon

lenses. Yes, I'm sure Canon wouldn't comment on Tamron.

They should work fine

If the Rebel X is a EOS camera (I believe it is) any lens that works on the Rebel X should work on the Digital Rebel XT.

Keep in mind that, becuase the chip in the Digital Rebel that captures the image is smaller than the 35mm film frame, the apparent focal length of the lens will be 1.6 times longer on the Digital rebel than the Rebel X.

Thanks to Breslin and others who responded to the question of interchangability of Canon Rebel XL 35mm and digital camera lenses.

To clarify, I have a 10 year old Canon 35mm body which I don't use any longer, and I'm interested in possibly purchasing a Rebel Digital.

I also have three lenses previously used with the 35mm body; 2 are Canon brand, and the other is a Tamron.

If Canon hasn't changed the lens mount specs between those of the older 35mm model and the newer digital body, I'm obviously ahead of the game by not having to purchase lenses for the digital if I pick one up.

Any suggestions appreciated...

And Breslin, thanks for the heads-up regarding the difference to be expected in focal length(s). But, will there be any obvious distorsion because that difference? Bottom line: Will it be less than "swift..." to try using the older lenses if in fact the Rebel digital body will accomodate them, fit wise?
