Desktop icons that move around; help

by pinetreelabs / March 8, 2005 1:56 AM PST

Just got my machine back after a crash and a fix. I have many icons on the desktop and they have specific places I want them to remain. Several of them will move on their own, usually going to exactly the same place. I have them aligned to a grid just as I had before the crash but that doesn't seem to keep the gremlins from moving them. Any ideas of a fix? It's always the ones that I continually use.

and you should se Arrange Icons in the context menu.

DESELECT whatever has been selected so none are selected. Now arrange them as desired.

Now, look for a handy little utility named WinTidy 2 by Neil Rubenking -,1759,90193,00.asp

pinetreelabs, For the desktop icon rearrangement problem go to the link below and download

"After you have downloaded the file, extract its contents into a folder. Open the folder and double click LAYOUT.REG to merge the information into your registry. Now copy the library LAYOUT.DLL to your Windows\System32 directory. To save your current desktop icon layout, right click on the Recycle Bin or My Computer on your desktop and select Save Desktop Icon Layout. To restore your previous desktop icon layout, right click the Recycle Bin or My Computer and select Restore Desktop Icon Layout."

The above is Free and works well.

Right click on your desk top and go to Arrange Icons By: Then uncheck "Auto Arrange." Your icons will then stay where you put them.
