Desktop Icons load slowly

by peterhb17 / March 30, 2006 7:36 PM PST

Have WIn XP pro SP1 with 1 Gb ram.
About 2 months ago I got problems with desktop startup.
Initially,my icons load with a default image and then update over about 6 - 8 seconds to display the correct image.
Previously the desktop opened up with all icons correctly displayed. Anyone got any suggestions as to what might be causing this ?
The rest of the system seems OK, I've tried going back a couple of months with system restore - no luck

peterhb17. It's possible that your iconcache needs to be increased. Go to the link below and scroll down to line 166 right colum and download the ''Add Icon Cache Size to Folder Options/View'' .reg file. Save the REG File to your hard disk. Double click it and answer yes to the import prompt. This will give you 4 icon cache choices under the View tab in Folder Options. You can experiment with the choices starting with the smallest first.

It's worth a try and won't hurt anything.

Thanks for that, it seems to have worked. I increased iconcache size to 4096 and desktop now loads with no apparent delay.
Incidentally, the site of Kelly's corner seems very good , lots of useful info I've already found a few additional tweaks which havew proved helpful.

Try this link, sometimes that slowdown on loading may be caused by spyware/malware.

Download Ewido, you can get it from Whilst it's only a 14 trial, you should easily be able to scan your system in that time. Just delete everything it finds, your system shoud be ok again, and make a system restore point both before you load the programme, and after you have finished the scan for safety.
