Desktop icons keep rearranging themselves.

by wcampb50 / October 14, 2008 6:19 AM PDT

I am running Windows XP 5.1, service pac 3. There are currently quite a few icons on my desktop and I have them arrange according to my liking. When I left click the desktop and look under 'arrange icons by', the only item checked is 'show desktop icons'. Every now and then when I boot up my computer, the icons rearrange themselves. This does not happen on a consistent basis, and I do not ask to have the icons rearranged. What is causing this?

Are you connecting to another monitor or to a tv?
by QuadFather / October 28, 2008 5:50 AM PDT

I am regularly switching out monitors and connecting my computer(s) to TV screens. This also regularly rearranges my desktop icons.

This is because different screens have different resolutions, ergo: my original arrangement of icons on a higher resolution screen may not fit the same way on a lower resolution screen. The icons are automatically adjusted for the smaller resolution screen, but are not automatically adjusted to their original arrangement when returning to the higher resolution screen.

This happens especially when you connect to a television screen, because these are typically lower resolution than your average computer screen.

I'm not really sure how to fix this other than changing the way I use desktop icons, but maybe this will at least help you to identify the source of the problem.
