The only thing I read that was interesting is that the HDMI cable, when connected to this older model reciever will not also handle the audio, just video. No confirmation, just something I heard as a complaint.
So in other words, if your directv box has HDMI output, you may also need to add an additional audio cable (either digital coaxial or digital optical) from the directv box to receiver in order to receive surround sound (or any sound, if what they say about HDMI is true for this particular Denon).
Another method would be to skip running HDMI to the receiver and connect HDMI directly to your HDTV, then either digital optical/digital coxial to the receiver. YMMV.
