connection to the server has been reset

by nelltierce / March 14, 2009 7:36 AM PDT

Everytime I try to download the AVG free virus protection, it will get about 2% and then I get kicked off line with a message saying connection to the server has been reset. I have HP pavilion a1020n with windows xp.

connection to the server

Yes, that is where I have been trying to get the download from. I have tried everyday for 2 weeks and still can't get it. I keep getting knocked off line with the message connection to the server has been reset. Thanks for the advice, but it didn't help.

Are you using any download accelerators?
by MarkFlax Forum moderator / March 18, 2009 6:17 AM PDT

If so, try downloading without it.

What sort of internet connection do you use?

No I'm not using an accelerator. I have also turned off the call waiting. My internet is Wal-Mart.

Try a download Manager like Firefox's
by MarkFlax Forum moderator / March 21, 2009 5:48 AM PDT

So you're on a dial-up connection, and the problem there is that the connection is comparatively slow, so it may be that the server times out on larger files.

If you use the Firefox browser its Download Manager has a 'Retry' option that will attempt to re-connect on a failed download. More on that here;

Alternatively, you could try and download AVG direct from the AVG web site, http://www.avg.com/

I'm not buying the timeout explanation.

I have been trying to download Avast Antivirus for days to no avail myself. I have Cable internet @ 3MB/sec download speed, and have tried 3 4 different browsers on 2 different operating systems and always get the Connection Reset message after only a few seconds of waiting. What could be reseting the connection on the CNet side, and why?
