Conflict on COM3 with internal modem

by geoffm / March 13, 2005 12:44 AM PST

My Acer notebook has a Smart Link 56k internal modem and whenever I try query the modem or use it to dial up to my ISP I get the message that the port is already in use by another program.

How do I find out what is using COM3 on my pc?

Details of problem
by geoffm / March 13, 2005 1:48 PM PST

Thanks for the tip. here are the details:

Notebook type: Acer Aspire 1400
Modem: Smart Link 56K Internal
OS: WinXP Pro

Error message: (This appears when trying to dialup to ISP)

Opening port....

Error 633: The modem (or other connecting device) is already in use or is not configured properly.

When I go into the modem properties and query the modem, I get this message:

The port that the modem is using is currently open by another application. Exit any application that may currently be using the port.

The modem properties indicate that the port being used is COM3.

Any help will be appreciated.

Thanks
Geoff

Are you sure it's COM3?
by R. Proffitt Forum moderator / March 13, 2005 8:21 PM PST

I found on many notebooks this com port to be the IrDA port. Disable that as well as try another port.

That's what the properties says
by geoffm / March 14, 2005 12:32 AM PST

When I look in the properties of the modem, it says it is using IRQ 11 and is attached to COM3.

I have just noticed that it says "Smart Link 56K VOICE Modem". Could this be the problem? The speed was also set to 460800. I have never seen this speed before, the max being 115200.

Looks like the right one.
by R. Proffitt Forum moderator / March 14, 2005 12:35 AM PST

If it was the common IrDA issue, it would not display this. As to the baud rate. That setting only applies to serial port connected modems and you don't have that.

change speed 115200.
by runscape / March 14, 2005 9:57 AM PST

Try change the speed to 115200.

No luck!!

In reply to: change speed 115200.

I have tried all the different options with no luck. A colleague said that he had encountered a similar problem before and found that the modem was actually faulty - possibly struck by lightning!!!

I installed an external ISDN modem last night and it worked like a charm, so I think I will disable the internal modem and get myself a new external USB one. That way I will know it works!

Thanks to you all for your suggestions and help!!!

by viewpoint09 / December 22, 2008 7:12 AM PST

HAVE HP PAVILLION WITH WIN XP HOM EDITION 2 YEARS OLD
USE DIAL UP MODEM ATTACHED TO COM 3.
FAX, PRINTER NOT CONNECTED
original modem- datafax soft modem with smart cp attached to com3 port- that came installed was replaced due to this problem with a new modem--PCI softv92 modem attached to com3 port.
on start up in the morning loose com3 port to some other program.
device manager shows no problem. modem cannot be queried because port is used by some other program!!
task manager do not show any 2 programs are accessing com3 at once.
so far only solution is to do a recovery and when modem is installed modem gets com3 port!!!!!
