Computer Won't Recognize USB Port for Printer

by debba1 / May 8, 2007 7:03 AM PDT

A couple of weeks ago, I installed a Lexmark x8350 printer (USB) on my Dell computer (running ME). It worked fine until yesterday. When I went to print a document, my computer no longer recognized the printer. I uninstalled the printer and now I can re-install it because it doesn't know it's there. Cables are O.K. (I purchased new ones this a.m.). In Device Manager, under USB, no printer USB is listed.

Any help fixing this problem would be most appreciated.

Debbie

I have encountered the same issue with Windoes XP SP2
by andre4 / May 13, 2007 10:40 PM PDT

The OS will recognize other USB devices, but it will not recognize printers (tried various printers). I have re-installed the drivers, XP Service Pack 2, to no avail. My next step is to reinstall XP, but this is a last resort.

Were you ever able to get this resolved? I'm in exactly the same boat except that I was running Windows 98SE. I hooked the printer up to my Dad's computer and everything works great, but here I am without printing capabilities.

Any assistance you can provide would be appreciated.

What I do.

I find and install the motherboard chipset drivers. I wear earplugs about "it worked before" or "it works with this or that." I also may dive into the BIOS settings to toggle the Legacy USB setting.

Just sharing the little things I do to fix this.
