Question

Certain Programs Won't install

by Squeeblybop / September 1, 2013 4:34 AM PDT

Recently I found that some programs wont install, for example the EA Origin client. The programs will generally get the to licence agreement stage the throw up an error simply saying that the program had stopped working.

Running windows 7 64bit OS

Cheers

Two possibilities

First, look at the prerequisites for the program. That will list which versions of Windows the product is supported with. If it's an older product, it may not be compatible with Windows 7. If that's the case, you can try installing it in compatibility mode or use a virtual mode product like XP Mode or Oracle Virtual Box. For compatibility mode, right-click the setup program and then click "Troubleshoot compatibility". If that doesn't work, you're left with either a virtual mode or possibly a dual boot one. XP Mode works well for all but high speed games and is free with Windows 7 Pro, Enterprise or Ultimate. Alternatively you can download Virtual Box from Oracle, install XP under it, and install your programs under XP.

Cheers, but tried both of them, and its newer programs rather than old ones that wont install. Completely stumped

I can't guess what's up here. It could be one of the newer antivirus suites that is blocking or restricting too tightly.

Post a reply to your top post with a HIJACKTHIS log for me to take a look over. I'll delete that later to keep the discussion tidy. Here's the link to that app.

Registry cleaner. Sorry but after I see those I walk away most of the time. I don't want to upset you but I find registry and system cleaners to create issues and not solve them.

Reading more.

Torrents and malware oh my. Sorry but this is not something I want to see anywhere.

This machine's condition is is quite sad. I'd have a long chat with those that advised you to install all this.

-> But on the bright side I'd look at moving from Open Office to LibreOffice.

UNS is very optional.

"Intel(R) Management & Security Application User Notification Service is an Intel hardware technology for remotely managing and securing PCs."

If this is some company owned PC, sure, keep it, but for me it's a possible security issue as it exposes the PC to remote tinkering. I never keep this one.

In reply to: UNS is very optional.

I'm going to look at removing some stuff and see how it fairs, not hopeful though as this problems only surfaced quite recently.

In regards to the bearshare, this was a refurbished laptop and came on it :S never seen the harm in just leaving it be, but I reckon it should go by now

Many thanks for the help, I'll give it a go.

Tried disabling all these and again no luck, thinking I may have to take it in somewhere.

That the laptop was preinstalled with the OS and not a fresh factory install. You do see this sort of complaint on used laptops. MORE STORY may help.

If the make and model was known I might find out how to use the factory restore to get it off to a fresh start.

The laptop is a Samsung NP-Rc520

windows 7 64bit OS

Intel i5-2410M processor

6GB ram

was bought rouchly 2 and a half years ago as a refurbished unit

Presumably that would reset the machine, remove installed programs and perhaps wipe the hard drive?

Thanks again

Sorry but in 2 years time you didn't make backup or

Restore media? I took this as you just encountered this issue and the log file is full of interesting issues. I posted each on their own but the worst of the lot is the downloaders such as Bearshare. Always bad news.

If the restore system is intact and you have your files safe on backups you can use Samsung's factory restore system noted in the user manual at http://www.samsung.com/uk/support/model/NP-RC520-S02UK-downloads

Setup file might have some files missing or corrupt.
by DavidChaze / September 2, 2013 12:45 AM PDT

Hi,

Like you said program wizard take you to licence agreement and then freezes, I would request you to try changing the source of setup i.e. if you are downloading the program setup from torrents or internet then possibility is the setup file might got corrupted during download. if problem persists then try updating your windows with Microsoft for Security and drivers updates.

Regards
David

No such luck
by Squeeblybop / September 2, 2013 7:37 AM PDT

Thanks man, but I've already tried a few sources for each program, and downloaded the setups on a different machine and then transferred to this one.

Its also happening the exact same with different programs from completely different companies (but not all programs) making me think its definitely a problem with this machine.
